An avalanche has killed two people at the mountainous ski resort used for the Sochi Olympics, a day after it was opened to the public.

The resort said in a statement that six skiers were on the middle section of a slope called Labirint at Roza Khutor on March 23 when the midday avalanche struck.

The statement said the snow buried two women, while four other skiers escaped unharmed.

Rescuers found the bodies of the women beneath the snow.

"Despite all efforts to revive them, they could not be saved," said the statement.

The Labirint run is located at the far edge of the resort, and labeled black, the most difficult of four categories.

Roza Khutor hosted the alpine ski, snowboarding, and other events at the Winter Olympic Games last month.
