Last Of 'Euromaidan' Barricades Cleared In Downtown Kyiv

City workers and volunteers have removed the last of the barricades that had been blocking a main artery in Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, since protests that forced a change of government began late last year.

Protesters had built the barricades to protect a tent camp on Independence Square, lending the "Euromaidan" label to the pro-European unrest that followed a decision by then-President Viktor Yanukovych's government to spurn key agreements with the European Union.

A determined core of demonstrators have remained since Yanukovych's flight to Russian exile in late February and a new government coming to power.

Some tents were left standing after the August 9 operation, with reports of a deal between Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, who was one of the leaders of the protests against Yanukovych, and the holdouts to ensure public access in the area.

On August 7, skirmishes broke out and workers and security forces eventually backed off from an attempt to clear the last of the Euromaidan debris and encampment.

Yanukovych was quickly replaced by parliamentary vote in a process that neighboring Russia has insisted was illegitimate, fueling its opposition to the current leadership in Kyiv and its Western supporters.
